On September 9, 2015, Hinsdale Police Officer Kevin Berland responded to a call for a motor vehicle crash that occurred on Route 83.  Upon arrival, Officer Berland found that the driver of a cement truck had struck a wall while driving though a construction zone.  The driver’s arm was thrown from the cab causing it to become pinned between the cab of the cement truck and the concrete wall.  This caused a severe injury to the arm and significant blood loss.  Without hesitation, Officer Berland began administering first aid to the driver by placing a tourniquet, that he carries on his person, around the arm to minimize blood loss.  The care of the driver was then turned over to responding paramedics from the Clarendon Hills Fire Department and the driver was transported to Good Samaritan for further treatment.  The treating emergency room staff reported that had Officer Berland not applied the tourniquet when he did the driver would have lost his lost his arm and probably died from blood loss.  Officer Berland’s quick thinking, preparedness and willingness to help saved this driver's life.
