Water Main Breaks

Water main breaks happen all year round for a variety of reasons, but are more frequent and visible in the winter. During a water main break, the ground or pavement will rise and water will flow out in a constant stream. Discharges of sump pumps from houses are often mistaken for water main breaks.

Repairs vary in time due to conditions such as weather and conflicts with other utilities. To make a repair, the crew has to shut off the water main. Water is generally off for 4 to 6 hours for the average repair. The crews typically knock on the doors of the homes affected by the shutdown unless it's late at night. When the water is turned back on, it may be discolored. This discoloration is generally due to mineral sediments in the water main that are disturbed from the repairs. This will settle in a short period of time. Unless you are specifically notified, the water remains safe to drink or what is commonly called "potable."

If you suspect a water main break, call the Water Department at (630) 789-7051 during normal business hours - 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. After hours, you may call the Police non-emergency line at (630) 789-7070.

Water Meter Replacement & Automated Meter Reading (AMR) System Program

The Village is continuing implementation of the Water Meter Replacement & AMR System Program. The purpose of the program is to replace approximately 5,000 water meters (generally those older than five years), as the age of most Village water meters is well beyond its useful life.  The Village is also implementing an automated meter reading system for all 5,800 water system accounts. Read more about the Water Meter Replacement program.
