How Can We Help You?

The Hinsdale Public Services Department conducts annual prescribed burns on two natural areas located on Village owned parcels. These locations are the Charleston Road Aquatic Garden and the Hinsdale Prairie. The Charleston Road Aquatic Garden is a 1.5 acre site located in the center of Charleston Road, off County Line Road (across from Katherine Legge Memorial Park). The Hinsdale Prairie is a 3-acre parcel located on the west side of Jackson Street between 7th and 8th Streets.
Prescribed burns are an effective form of weed control and also help invigorate native plant growth. Timing of a prescribed burn is sensitive and must be performed before native plants begin actively growing. Public Services have scheduled the prescribed burn for the week of March 20, 2023, weather dependent. The burns will be completed in one day and will occupy approximately 6 hours.
Per municipal code 4-2-8: Open Burning, the open burning must be approved by the Village Manager. The code is attached to this permission form. Additionally, Public Services have obtained the necessary permits from the Illinois EPA.
Residents in the near vicinity of these areas will be sent advanced notification letters and will receive an additional letter with the exact burn date once the weather forecast is confirmed. The Hinsdale Fire Department provides support by staging a fire engine as a precaution. The Clarendon Hills Fire Department will also be notified when the exact date is confirmed.
